Attractions and Days Out in Devon

Devon is a County of many contrasts. It encompasses a rich agricultural region known as the South Hams which extend from the eastern outskirts of Plymouth to Prawle Point, Dartmouth and Totnes. The South Hams are the most southerly part of Devon and enjoy the mildest climate in Britain with flowers frequently blooming into December.

In contrast the Atlantic Gales have battered North Devon into a spectacular stretch of rugged cliffs, interrupted only by Woolacombe Sands and the long sand flats that extend southwards from Saunton to Westward Ho.

In between North and South Devon lies Dartmoor National Park, famous for its prison and rugged desolate beauty. Covering 360 square miles between Oakhampton, Tavistock, Ivy Bridge, Buckfastleigh and Chudleigh, Dartmoor National Park is the largest tract of open countryside left in southern England. The remains of many prehistoric hill-forts, barrows, hut circles and standing stones are reminders of the moor’s earliest occupants.

Central Devon lies between the heights of Exmoor and Dartmoor, bounded by Morchard Bishop, South Molton and Hatherleigh. The area is crossed by narrow richly wooded valleys with many rivers and streams.

To the east is Exeter, one of the chief cities of the south-west and one of the most historic cities in England. At its heart is the magnificent Exeter Cathedral.

South of Exeter from Dawlish to Torquay and Brixham, the area is known as the Devon Riviera, noted for colourful, luxuriant vegetation, golden sands and vivid blue seas. This is a very popular area for tourists with extensive holiday camps, caravan parks, hotels and guest houses. For visitors looking for a quieter location further to the east of Dawlish is Sidmouth which is quieter than the Dorset Riviera.
